"I smiled at the moment when I realized I had learned a lot unconsciously. That presentation just became the self-reflection kit of my lighting design career."

What is your favorite part of working with BR+A?

The people at BR+A. The company has many departments, and everyone comes from different backgrounds. I learned a lot from my colleagues in professional and personal aspects.

How long have you been with BR+A?

I joined BR+A in 2020. It’s been 2.5 years.

Where is your favorite place in New York?

I love the Lower East Side of Manhattan. I’m always impressed by the people walking on the street in LES. They are confident and comfortable with their look and appreciate each other’s style. It reminds me of the inclusion of this fantastic city, which is one reason I’m here.

What is the best piece of professional advice you’ve ever received?

Find a mentor and be a mentor. This is from my lighting department principal and the school professor, Brooke Silber. She guided the team on the design projects and taught students in accordance with their aptitude, so everyone could maximize their talent and contribute to the team with a happy face. In the past two and a half years, I learned a lot from my principal and supervisor and had a great experience working with them. It makes me want to do the same thing – become a mentor when a new member joins our team.

What’s one thing that’s made you smile recently?

The lighting team recently revisited a manufacturer’s showroom two years after the last time. We had a similar presentation, but I could understand more about the content. I smiled at the moment when I realized I had learned a lot unconsciously. That presentation just became the self-reflection kit of my lighting design career.

Do you have any hidden talents? Or is there something people don’t know about you?

I have been dancing street dance for 15 years. I participated in many shows and competitions in Taiwan and went to dance studios regularly after moving to New York.

What has been your favorite project at BR+A?

My favorite project is MBCC (MassBay Community College). It is my first start-from-scratch project working with my supervisor, Nancy Lok. We did the typical spaces and some unique exterior artwork lighting design, and we even tested new software to solve our design problems. It was like a work-and-design boot camp for me in my first year in BR+A.
