Boston University, Duan Family Center for Computing and Data Sciences
At 345,000 GSF and 21-stories, the Duan Family Center for Computing & Data Sciences (CCDS) is the tallest building in the Northeast that relies upon ground-source heat pumps for all its heating and cooling. It is also by far the largest commercial high-rise building in Boston to have no gas connection, relying on heat pumps. Over the past four years, the City of Boston has pointed to the BU CCDS building as the beacon for the future of carbon neutral buildings in the city, paving the way for the approval of Boston's Zero Net Carbon Zoning and the proposed gas ban. One hundred percent of the building's annual energy consumption is offset by renewable energy, including on-campus solar and off-campus wind, and the building will be LEED Zero Energy and LEED Platinum certified. The building houses mathematics, statistics, computer science, and the Hariri Institiute for Computing and Computational Science & Engineering. The building encourages campus-wide collaboration and includes computer science labs, classrooms, and office space. A major investment in public space includes the exterior open space, bike lanes, the first floor of the building, as well as terrace on the seventeenth floor with impressive views of the Charles River and Cambridge.
